Uttarayan: An insight

Uttarayan was started in 1978, as a social club for the culturally conscious Bengalis of Hyderabad. In the last 37 years, Uttarayan has emerged to be the single-most important venue for Kali Puja and Diwali Utsav in the twin cities. We get together every year during this time for communal worship and remarkable cultural activities. What started out as an important time of the year for Bengalis has expanded to count non-Bengalis of Hyderabad and Secunderabad as its important members.

Kali Puja and Diwali Utsav at Uttarayan are spread over 3 to 4 days with a variety of programs to encourage maximum involvement and participation. Competitions are organized for drama, dance, sports, antakshari, painting, quiz and cookery etc., for members, their families and friends. To recognize talent, "Outstanding Achievement Awards" and Literary Awards are given out every year.

Prizes are also given to the writers for the best poem & the best short story in our annual souvenir. Uttarayan also undertakes welfare activities like, providing support to orphanage and old age homes, in cash or kind, donation to calamity relief funds, etc.

However, today Uttarayan's activities are not just limited to Kali Puja and Diwali Utsav. Since last year Uttarayan has celebrated Bengali New Year, Saraswati Puja, Rabindra Jayanthi, Annual picnic as well as a Drama festival.

With the continued support of our members and patrons, Uttarayan aspires to attain greater heights in years to come.

Uttarayan welcomes you all.
