Uttarayan: An insight

UTTARAYAN was born in 1978, as a social club, out of sheer enthusiasm of a group of culturally conscious Bengalees residing in and around S.R. Nagar, Hyderabad. Now, it is three decades old. During this period, the growth has been tremendous in terms of membership and variety of activities. It has emerged as an acknowledged social club with an impressive track record of organizing spectacular events and entertainment programmes during Si Sri Kali Puja and Diwali Celebrations. The entertainment programmes are organized to attract both Bengalees and non-Bengalees to ensure the participation of the community at large.

Throughout the year, various activities are organized befitting the festival or occasion with the primary objective of upholding the unique Bengali culture. The calendar of events starts with Saraswati Puja (Goddess of Learning) , followed by 'Holi', Nabo Barsho (New Year) and then Rabindra Jayanti (Birthday of late Sri Rabindranath Tegore) celebrations. Thereafter, Bijoya Sammelani is organized to facilitate meeting of all members, their family and friends to exchange pleasantries and good wishes after the conclusion of Durga Puja.

After Bijoya Sammelani comes the mega event of UTTARAYAN - Sri Sri Kali Puja (Goddess of Shakti) & Diwali celebration. This celebration is spread over a period of 3 / 4 days with a variety of programmes. To encourage maximum involvement and participation, competitions are organized for drama, dance, sports, antakshari, painting, quiz, cooking etc., for members, their families and friends. The calendar of events closes with an annual "PICNIC" in the last week of December. Besides the above activities, UTTARAYAN undertakes welfare activities of support to orphanage or old age homes, in cash or kind, donation to calamity relief funds, etc.

To recognize talents among members and their families, "Outstanding Achievement Awards" have been introduced since last year - 2007. UTTARAYAN also encourages its members and their families to contribute articles, poems, short-stories etc., for publication in the souvenir published every year during Kali Puja celebration. Awards are given for the writers for best poem & short story.

Presently, we have more than 120 members from diverse professions. Their contact numbers are available in the souvenir published during the Sri Sri Kali Puja.

Our strength has been our members and patrons. Their support, service and good wishes have been over-whelming. With the confidence and their continued support, UTTARAYAN aspires to attain greater heights in years to come and claim the status of the most popular cultural organization in the twin cities.

UTTARAYAN welcomes you all
